Beware Rip-Off 'Training Companies'

Beware of Rip-Off Training Companies cashing in on the Mining Skills Shortage Misrepresentation

Many training companies are cashing in on hard working Australians keen to up skill themselves for non-existent jobs wrongly touted by the various media, typically charging large sums of money for inductions and plant operator tickets to get people ‘job-ready’.

There is hardly a day goes by where the public will not be informed by the media that the ever expanding mining industry is facing an insurmountable skills shortage but the fundamental word that has not been defined here is ‘skilled’. The mining companies define ‘skilled’ as someone who has the necessary skills and qualifications to perform an occupation as well as previous experience working on a mine site. The rest of the world understands skilled as someone with skills, qualifications and experience.

The stark reality is that for some occupations there is an overabundance of skilled, experienced people out of work and looking for the same opportunities that ‘newly qualified’ Greenskins are after. The top of these occupations are

	Plant Operators

	Trade Assistants

	Electricians

At the present time, no mining company will have difficulty in finding a person for any of the above occupations.

On the flip-side, if you are in an occupation that is highly desired, such as a mining engineer, geologist or have transferable skill sets (ie, experienced project manager with a history of delivering projects on time/budget), the cash rich mining companies will not batter an eyelid to put you through the necessary inductions.

If the training companies are affiliated with a company that can give you some degree of confidence that they can assist you with employment opportunities once qualified, they would be the better option to commit your cash to.

Agency Workers Regulations (AWR)

The Agency Worker’s regulations – more commonly know now as AWR – became law on 1st October 2011.
The regulations give agency workers the right to the same basic employment and working conditions as comparable permanent employees on day one of their temporary assignment - plus rights to equal pay after completion of a 12-week qualifying period.
However, despite concern in some quarters that the construction industry could be one of the hardest hit, it seems that many employers are still unclear about their responsibilities.
At a recent AWR conference, Marc Cullinane, Managing Director of Construct Recruitment, urged employers to look very closely at the legislation.
Mr Cullinane pointed out some employers still mistakenly believe that they can dodge the new legislation by routinely ending temporary workers contracts at 11 weeks and he warned employers to be on their guard against advice that contracts for services provide automatic exemption.
Employers wishing to conduct an AWR risk assessment can obtain a free AWR video - “The facts about AWR” - plus free general AWR advice from Construct Recruitment (number appears on screen).

Market Update - October 2011

According to the Construction Products Association, the construction industry is experiencing its worst decline for over 30 years.

Chief Executive Michael Ankers was quoted as saying - with some alarm - that whilst a drop in public sector spend was to be expected, the fall in new orders for private sector construction is down 8% on the first quarter of the year and 10% down on the same quarter last year.

Marc Cullinane, Managing Director of Construct Recruitment, agreed that there has been a drop off in major construction projects but he remains bullish about the outlook for commercial re-fits and residential refurbishments.

When quizzed this month about his company’s best monthly results since 2008, Cullinane said that in the last 5 days alone his company has placed over 88 construction workers.

He said that whilst he remains hopeful that the government will help re-balance the economy via investment in the country’s infrastructure, the key in tougher markets is to spot - and take advantage of – opportunities, and to work smarter than your competitors.

After thousands of requests from previous workers, Construct has finally expanded into Australia! This move Down Under has been inspired, in part, by the number of our Construct ‘family’ that have returned to their homes in Australia. We know literally thousands of you back in Oz and we want to reconnect with as many of you as possible to offer you the same level of straight talking service that we gave you in London.

You know how we operate, you know that to us you are more than a number, you are part of the Construct community – please get in touch. Tell your friends, tell your boss – let them become part of the community too and we will look after them just as we’ve looked after you.

You can also sign up to follow us on Twitter (@ConstructAUS), and Facebook (www.facebook.com/construct.recruitment) - where we will post vacancies, news and Construct community updates – and ‘Like’ our Facebook page where you can keep up to date with what’s going on and where you could find old mates from your London days.

We would love to hear from each and every one of you, whether you are still in the construction game or not. Your previous faith in us has, in its way, enabled us to grow and develop the way we have – it is the people that we work with that give us such a sense of satisfaction – so please flick us an email (lee@constructrecruitment.com or mark@constructrecruitment.com ), update us with your new Aussie phone numbers and we’ll give you a buzz.
